Sheer Drop – Mountain Goats – Print – 400/950

Here is the story as told to me by Robert Bateman during one of our many visits:

While on a visit to a famous Art Gallery in New York City, he was looking in the section of the museum displaying Abstract Art when he came upon a large canvas with a solid grey background, a slash of white down the left-hand side, and two medium sized white circles upper middle right on the piece. That was his inspiration to paint ‘Sheer Drop – Mountain Goats’. The background is a dark grey-brown side of a very steep cliff. Down the left-hand side is a waterfall from top to bottom getting wider as it moves towards the bottom of the painting. On the near top right side of the painting are two white mountain goats standing on a very narrow edge seemingly unconcerned about the precarious position they are in while surveying the world around them.
