“The village of Ninstints is the jewel of the Haida culture. Although I am not a scholar, I have taken a lifelong interest in tribal art. At its best this art is comparable with any art in world history. It developed from its own deep cultural roots. The isolation of earlier times permitted unique, creative development style. In my view the three strongest art forms are those of the Sepic River in Papua, New Guinea, the Dogon in Mali and the Haida is Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlottes). If pressed I would put the Haida first. The deserted village of Ninstints is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.”
