Here is a summary of a story Robert Bateman told me on a time together:

He was being honored at a museum in Calgary where he was gifting his original painting of this piece ‘Autumn Overature – Moose’. While speaking to the gathered crowd, he mentioned that he first saw the scene depicted without any moose present, but he had added the moose to a scene that inspired him. The next day, the press called him a fraud, because the moose had not been present when he observed the scene. He simply countered with, “I am pretty sure that Michelangelo did not see the hand of God when he painted the Sistine Chapel”.
