This is one of three pieces that the artist created from his experience on a safari. These pieces were published in England.

“One evening in Amboseli Park in Kenya, on our way back to camp we saw in the setting
sun a big herd of wildebeests drawing together for the night.  I was impressed by the
mellowness of the mood and by the light and color – a kind of liquid gold over everything
just before the sun dropped below the horizon. When I was doing the painting, I
experimented with different sizes and places for the sun; finally, I put it just off the
classic dynamic point of the rectangle of the painting.”
